What does the song 'A Long December' by 'Counting Crows'-1996 mean?

What does the song 'A Long December' by 'Counting Crows' mean?

What does the song '25 Or 6 To 4' by 'Chicago'-1970 mean?

This went to number 4 in the United States and it climed up to number 7 in the United Kingdom. One of the oddest titles of the rock era, and there have been some strange ones. Like most Chicago songs this one featured lots of horns. This one is still a favorite of marching bands everywhere. This is a song that seems to have a deep profound meaning. It doesn't. The common assumption is that this is a song about LSD. It's not. There are people that will fight tooth and nail to prove this must be about a drug trip. But it's not. Just another in a long line of 60s and 70s songs that people think are about drugs but they are mistaken. So what is it about? What does it mean? This is actually about the simplest thing a song can be about. It's about trying to write a song., staying up all night struggle to come up with words and lyrics. So how does 25 or 6 to 4 fit in? It's what time it was when he finally finished writing the song. He meant 'its 25 or 26 minutes until 4 AM'. Robert Lamm wrote the song, maybe he can explain it better. "I was living with a bunch of hippies up above Sunset Strip. One of the advantages of this particular house was that it was in the Hollywood Hills and I could look out over the city late at night. I wanted to try to describe the process of writing the song that I was writing. So, 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky' - there was a neon sign across the city. That song came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4am in the morning when I looked at my watch - I was looking for a line to finish the chorus.
Most songs that were written, especially in the early days, whenever I got them to the band and we started rehearsing them, that's when the songs took shape - once these guys got hold of them. There was definitely a lot of raw material, I thought it was a song when I wrote the words down, I wrote the changes down and I brought the charts to rehearsal, but it wasn't really a song until they all played it
." By the way this wasn't the first or last time a song was written about writing a song. Natasha Bedingfield even reached number one with a song about NOT being able to write a song in 2004 with 'These Words'. Feel free to comment below.

What does the song 'In The Air Tonight' by 'Phil Collins'-1981 mean?

This song reached number 19 on the US charts and number 2 in the UK.  This was the first solo single by the former Genisis drummer. He offered it up to the band but they decided it was too 'simple' of a song. This is from the album Face Value which is what fans should have taken the songs for. What does it mean? What is in the air? You have probably heard the rumor (myth) about this song. That it is actually about someone drowning and someone not helping. The story continues that Phil was watching the whole thing. It is never clear why Phil wouldn't have helped the 'victim'. There are several versions to the story, they can all be found at Snopes.com. They are all untrue, every single one of them. As if the myth didn't have enough legs of it's own, Eminem included the story in his song "STAN" in 2000. This song is actually solely about the anger Collins felt as his first marriage fell apart and ending in a divorce. The mean things he says in the song are directed at his wife, who he later tried desperately to get back. So what was coming in the air that he was waiting for? The big fight that ended the relationship. A somber note yes, but this song is perfect for a dramatic buildup of anything and continues to show up in media of all kinds.

What does the song 'Beat It' by 'Michael Jackson'-1982 mean?

One of the biggest, best-known pop songs of all time.  Two Grammys and two AMA awards. It propelled MJ to stardom rarely seen. You could dance to it, sing to it and to top it off it had a rock guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen. Quincy Jones wanted him to write a song like 'My Sharona'. It turned out great but this is about the meaning. What about those lyrics? What did they mean? No, it was not a sexual innuendo, it was not about an abusive parent and it was not non-sensical.  It was about a rumble, also known as a gang fight. Most likely inspired by the classic musical 'West Side Story'. Jackson was a peace lovin' guy and his advice was not to fight, just Beat It (get the heack outta here). I'd like to hear what you think. Please feel free to comment below.

What does the song 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by 'Green Day'-2004 mean?

This song reached number 6 in the US and made it to number 8 in the UK. An undeniably slow, sad song. Anyone who has ever lost someone (in any way) in September has a strong opinion about this song. Some seem to like it very much, others try to avoid it at all costs because of memories it brings up. It is sung with great emotion which amplifies the feelings even more. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote and performs the song for the group. Like many pieces here on Song Sense the title was thought of first and was something that was taken straight from real life. I'll get to that in a moment. Many people believe this song was written about the terrorist attacks that occurred in America on September 11th, 2001 that killed over 3000 people. The song certainly fits and the band acknowledges the paralells. However the song is actually about an event that occured 19 years prior to 9/11/01. The song was written about Armstrongs father who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. Billie was 10 years old at the time. His dads funeral was too much for the young boy and he broke down in tears. He left the funeral early, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother arrived back at the house she went up and knocked on his door. He blurted out "Wake me up when September ends." That stuck in his head and he finally put his feelings to music over 20 years later in 2003.  Thats why he includes the line "Like my father's come to pass, 20 years has gone so fast". At the beginning when he mentions 7 years he is talking about the 7 years between his fathers death and the forming of Green Day. The rest is just Billie expressing the pain of losing his father. Feel free to leave a comment.

What does the song 'Pon De Replay' by 'Rihanna'-2005 mean?

This was the 8th biggest song of 2005 in the United States. It reached number 2 both in the US and the United Kingdom. It was a true world wide hit by reaching number one in Portugal and New Zealand. A dance hit from the album Music Of The Sun. What does it mean? What is Pon De Peplay. Well lets go to the field for the call. It's another song about a song. But unlike Natasha Bedingfied this song is about a different song. One that Rihanna wants to hear again and again while she is dancing in her favorite club. Quite simply Pon De Replay is a Caribbean term taken right from Barbados, the Bajan dialect to be exact. It translates as "Play It Again".  In the song Rihanna is danceing and wants to hear her favorite song again and again.

What does the song 'Baby' by 'Justin Bieber'-2010 mean?

This song reached number 5 in the US and peaked at number 3 in the UK. It also reached the top 10 in at least ten other countries. The song features some rap by Ludacris. It starts out with a synthesized piano then is carried almost exclusively by a drum beat, clap effects and a metallic rattle throughout the rest of the song. Somehow it works. Bieber co-wrote the song alongside Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash. What does it mean? He says 'baby' what seems like several hundred times in the song. He also promises things to her. Is this someone that won't give him the time of day? Someone who he has never met? Someone famous? Is it an ex-girlfriend? Well, would you believe all...or none of the above? It's never made clear if this is somebody new, an acquaintance, friend or an ex. The song focusus just on the fact that he is really struggling to get this girl to be with him. He put in simple terms when explaining it to Digital Spy "I'm basically saying I really like this girl and would do anything to make her my girlfriend." OK. He told MTV News regarding the song and video "It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didn't [get] along; we couldn't be together," he said. "Basically I want her back and [I'm] kind of going through the whole thing. I'm chasing her around, trying to get her, and she's kind of playing hard to get, but I'm persistent. I keep going." The video seems to end with him getting the girl but the song portrays a sad ending with Justin repeatedly saying "I'm gone, I'm all gone" which suggests he has given his all in a futile effort. What does the song '3 AM' by 'Matchbox Twenty'-1996 mean?

This song reached number 2 on the US singles chart. It only reached number 64 as a single in the UK but it did reach number one in Canada. This was the second hit for the band ('Push' was the first). Rob Thomas wrote this one. At first listen it sounds like a guy singing about a quirky girl that he really likes. But where does the 3 A.M. come in. What does it mean? Thomas wrote this song about his mother. When he was 12 his mother was told by doctors that she had cancer and only 6 months to live. Six years later when he moved out of the house is mother was still alive and well. Seemed like a happy ending. Not really. Thomas says during this time his mother developed a care-free flippant attitude towards life. Not in a good way. She was going out to bars, partying, thinking 'why not, it could all end any time'. This was a very hard time for Rob Thomas. He felt alone, frustrated and was worried about her a lot. Thats where the song comes in. It mainly describes her newly misguided attitude toward life. What about the 3 A.M.? That is what time the bars usually closed. What do you think? You can comment below.
